Lufkin Industries owes its beginning to Frank Kavanaugh, Sr., and his son, Frank Jr., who owned a small foundry and repair shop at Rusk, located 45 miles north of Lufkin. The Kavanaugh's principal customers were sawmills in the Lufkin area and in 1902 they joined with several sawmill owners, J.H. Kurth Sr., Eli Wiener, and S.W. Henderson Sr. to found Lufkin Foundry and Machine Company.
